Alexander Soloviev
Musical Director and Principal Conductor
Alexander Solovyov graduated from the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music in 1998, specialising in choral conducting, and completed a postgraduate assistantship in 2000 (supervisor — Vladimir Semenyuk). In 2006, he undertook a further postgraduate assistantship in opera and symphony conducting (supervisor — Vladimir Fedoseyev). Between 1998 and 2006, he also studied regularly with the conductor Arnold Kats.
From 1995 to 2010, he served as Associate Conductor of the Moscow State Academic Chamber Choir under the direction of Vladimir Minin. Between 2001 and 2020, he taught at the Department of Choral Conducting of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music (appointed Associate Professor in 2008). From 2011 to 2020, he taught at the Department of Opera and Symphony Conducting, and between 2011 and 2014 he directed the Academy’s orchestra. For over ten years, he collaborated with Galina Vishnevskaya’s Opera Singing Centre, conducting the entire repertoire and gala concerts.
As an assistant conductor, he took part in numerous premiere productions at the Bolshoi Theatre. For nine years, he actively collaborated with and conducted concerts for the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia’s Youth Programme.
Alexander Soloviev conducted the final rounds of the V and VI Galina Vishnevskaya International Opera Singers Competition, and the I and II Vladimir Kraynev Moscow International Piano Competition. He has worked with such musicians as Vladimir Fedoseyev, Saulius Sondeckis, Mikhail Pletnyov, Vasily Sinaisky, Marcello Viotti, Fabio Luisi, Evgeny Nesterenko, Zurab Sotkilava, Irina Arkhipova, Makvala Kasrashvili, Maria Guleghina, Hibla Gerzmava, Laura Claycomb, Paata Burchuladze, Ildar Abdrazakov, Thomas Allen, Leo Nucci, Denis Matsuev, Alexander Ramm, and Aylen Pritchin. As a conductor, Alexander Soloviev has cooperated with many renowned orchestras, including the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, the Russian National Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, the Svetlanov State Academic Symphony Orchestra, the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Academic Symphony Orchestra.
Since 2021, he has taught at the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (appointed Professor in 2023).
In December 2020, Alexander Soloviev was appointed the Principal Conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre, in July 2022 became the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the theatre.
