This Russian-language performance of a masterpiece — “music that enters the heart and shakes the soul” — is accompanied by a video art backdrop and excerpts from World War II newsreels. Sergey Novikov, who had the original idea for the production, translated the canonical Latin text of the Requiem into Russian in order to make it accessible to a wider audience, enabling listeners to feel the whole depth, might, and universality of the work. The creators of this stage adaptation envision Requiem as a tribute to those who perished during the siege of Leningrad. Their choice of Verdi’s piece was no coincidence — the powerful expressiveness of his music resonates with the terrible images of the blockaded city. The video accompaniment creates a dialogue between historical periods, giving these heroic events a timeless quality.
