The Mikhailovsky Theatre on Tour in Estonia
19–20 May 2012

The Mikhailovsky Theatre is to take part in the fifth Jõhvi International Ballet Festival in Estonia from 17 to 20 May.

The European-standard festival is a matter of special pride for the small Estonian town. In previous years it has featured ballet stars from Moscow, St. Petersburg, England, Scandinavia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and other countries. The performances by the Mikhailovsky Theatre will be the highlight of the fifth Jõhvi Ballet Festival. The programme has been compiled in such a way that in the course of two evenings the Mikhailovsky ballet company will be able to demonstrate the full range of its capabilities. The audiences will see Nacho Duato’s one-act ballets that have already become the company’s trademark and José Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane, one of the outstanding ballets of the mid-20th century. The classical tradition will be represented by Marius Petipa’s The Cavalry Halt and a divertissement.

On 19 May the company will perform Nacho Duato’s one-act ballets Without Words, Duende, and Nunc Dimittis. Without Words is a reflection on love and death, «the story of the human life cycle in dance» (RBK Daily). The Spanish word Duende means ‘elf’ or ‘spirit’: the choreographer presents scenes of the interrelationships between mysterious forms of nature that are invisible to human beings. The Estonian audiences will be particularly interested in Nunc Dimittis, set to the music of Arvo Pärt.

On 20 May the company will perform Marius Petipa’s one-act ballet The Cavalry Halt, a light sketch in which the virtuoso dancing is permeated with humour and irony. The star of The Moor’s Pavane, based on the plot of Othello, is undoubtedly Farukh Ruzimatov. The leading role in The Moor’s Pavane is one of Ruzimatov’s greatest achievements as a dancer. Each movement has a symbolic meaning, and the minimalist one-act ballet conveys all the depth and power of Shakespeare’s tragedy. The third part of the programme will feature a divertissement consisting of excerpts from classical choreography.

Among the soloists appearing at Jõhvi will be Ekaterina Borchenko, Leonid Sarafanov, Marat Shemiunov, Tatiana Miltseva, and Andrey Kasyanenko.
