Valentin Bogdanov

In 1989 he graduated from the Choral School at the Leningrad State Academic Chapel, and in 1995 from the conducting and choral department of the Petrozavodsk State Conservatory. In 1998, he completed his assistantship in opera and symphony conducting at the Moscow State Conservatory.
In 1997 he was invited to the Magnitogorsk Opera and Ballet Theatre.
In 2000 he began collaborating with the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Tomsk State Philharmonic as a guest conductor. In 2000–2005, he worked as chief conductor of the Karaganda Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra (Kazakhstan) and the Karaganda Academic Theatre of Musical Comedy, where “Tosca” by G. Puccini, “Rigoletto” by G. Verdi, and “The Barber of Seville” by G. Rossini were staged under his direction. In 2005–2008, he worked as the chief conductor of the Astrakhan State Musical Theatre, and was the musical director of new stage versions of “Aida” and “La Traviata” by G. Verdi, “The Tsar’s Bride” by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. In 2008–2011, he produced a number of premiere performances at the St. Petersburg Opera Theatre as a conductor-producer, including “Don Juan” by W.-A. Mozart, “Betrothal in a Monastery” by S. S. Prokofiev (staged by Yuri Alexandrov).
Since 2011 — conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Numerous opera and ballet performances have been staged under his direction over the years. He worked as the musical director assistant on productions and concert performances of the operas “Katya Kabanova” by L. Janacek, “Billy Budd” by B. Britten, “La Bohème” and “Manon Lescaut” by G. Puccini, “Don Pasquale” by G. Donizetti, and the ballets “Flame of Paris” by B.V. Asafiev and “Corsair”. He collaborated with leading directors and choreographers, including Niels-Peter Rudolph, Jürgen Flimm, Arnault Bernard, Mikhail Messerer, conducted performances with the participation of outstanding artists, including Elena Obraztsova, Farukh Ruzimatov, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Ivan Vasiliev, Victoria Tereshkina and many more.
During the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s tours he performed abroad, promoting the development of international contacts with the largest musical theatres in Europe and Asia. In recent years the conductor’s tours have included performances with opera and ballet theatre troupes in Japan, London, Dublin, and New York.
He regularly takes part in cycles of opera and symphony concerts on the stage of the Hermitage Theatre. For many years he has been the chief conductor of the Baltic Symphony Orchestra, as well as a jury member of various international children’s music competitions.
Since 2023 — conductor and chief choirmaster of the Mikhailovsky Theatre.
