Karen Akopov
bass, opera soloist at the Mikhailovsky Theatre
Honoured Artist of Russia
Karen Akopov graduated from the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute in 1979, and in 1988 from the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad State Conservatory, where his teacher was People’s Artist of the USSR Nikolai Okhotnikov. While studying at the Conservatory, the artist was involved in productions of operas by Leonid Desyatnikov and Sergei Banevich at the “Zazerkalye” Theatre.
In 1989, the singer joined the troupe of the Leningrad State Academic Maly Opera and Ballet Theatre (now the Mikhailovsky Theatre). Reviewers note that Karen Akopov’s voice is distinguished by power and expressiveness, and the singer skilfully uses his excellent vocal school and flexible acting nature both to create comic images and to embody stern, domineering characters.
In 2010, Karen Akopov was awarded the title of Honoured Artist of Russia.
