Yury Vorobiev
Yuri Vorobiev graduated from the Choral School of the Glinka Academic Cappella in St Petersburg in 1998 and subsequently studied at the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire. Since 2002, he has been a soloist with the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers. Since 2009, he has been a soloist with the Mariinsky Opera Company. At the Mariinsky Theatre, he has performed the following roles: Masetto (Mozart’s Don Giovanni), Sarastro (Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte), Don Prudenzio (Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims), Rocco (Beethoven’s Fidelio), Oroveso (Bellini’s Norma), Ramfis (Verdi’s Aida), Sparafucile (Verdi’s Rigoletto), Monk (Verdi’s Don Carlo), Banco (Verdi’s Macbeth), Lodovico (Verdi’s Otello), Jacopo Fiesco (Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra), Colline (Puccini’s La Bohème), Timur (Puccini’s Turandot), Cesare Angelotti (Puccini’s Tosca), Narbal (Berlioz’s Les Troyens), Balducci (Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini), Gurnemanz (Wagner’s Parsifal), Truffaldino (Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos), Crespel (Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Inigo (Ravel’s L’Heure espagnole), Podkolesin (Mussorgsky’s Marriage), Tokmakov (Rimsky-Korsakov’s Maid of Pskov), Mendoza (Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery), Old Convict (Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Tiresias (Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex), and Zosima (Smelkov’s Brothers Karamazov). The singer’s répertoire also includes the bass roles in Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem, Bach’s Mass in B Minor, and Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony. He frequently tours with the Mariinsky Opera; under the baton of Valery Gergiev, he has performed the bass role in Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony at the Konzerthaus in Vienna and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the role of Timur in Turandot at NHK Hall in Tokyo, the role of Narbal in Les Troyens at Suntory Hall in Tokyo and Carnegie Hall in New York, the role of Gurnemanz in Parsifal at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff, the Barbican Hall in London, and Symphony Hall in Birmingham, and the bass part in Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He has also recently performed Verdi’s Requiem under the baton of Mariss Jansons at the Concertgebouw and with NHK Orchestra under the baton of Semyon Bychkov, Parsifal under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death with the BBC Orchestra under the baton of Ilan Volkov. The singer has received invitations from prestigious international opera houses and festivals, among them the Aix-en-Provence Festival (France), the Salzburg Festival (Austria), the Opéra de Lyon (France), and the Canadian Opera Company (Toronto). In 2012, the Royal Opera House invited Yuri Vorobiev to appear as Colline in La Bohème.
