Giulio Zappa

Giulio Zappa studied under the guide of Oleg Marshev, finishing his piano degree with honors at the Conservatoire of Novara. At the same time, he graduated with honors in foreign languages and literatures at the Milan University, with a dissertation upon Russian opera. He eventually continued his studies with Aldo Ciccolini and Irwin Gage, with this latter for the vocal chamber music repertoire.

He started his activity as a piano accompanist for opera répertoire in the class of Bianca Maria Casoni in Milan. Since 1996, he has had an intense concert career all over the world and has been often invited both as an opera vocal coach and recital accompanist in many theaters and festivals of Europe and Asia, such as Bordeaux National Opera, Opera de Lorraine, Seoul Art Center, Madrid Royal Theatre, Maestranza Theatre in Seville, Mozart Festival in La Coruna, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Tenerife Opera Festival, Las Palmas Opera Festival, Wigmore Hall, St John’s Smith Square, Rudolfinum in Prague, Verdi Conservatoire Hall in Milan, Biwako Hall, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Society, and others.

He has been a vocal coach and continuo player at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro for the productions of Rossini’s La Gazzetta, Torvaldo e Dorliska, La gazza ladra, Sigismondo, and Matilde di Shabran for the labels Dynamic and Decca. He has worked as a vocal coach at the Welsh National Opera and for three editions of the prestigious BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.

He has collaborated with artists of different generations of the Italian and the international opera system, such as Giulietta Simionato, Luigi Alva, Luciano Pavarotti, Katia Ricciarelli, Lella Cuberli, Piero Cappuccilli, Enzo Dara, Leo Nucci, Michele Pertusi, Alfonso Antoniozzi, Bruno De Simone, Gregory Kunde, Daniela Barcellona, Juan Diego Florez, Larry Brownlee, Bruno Praticò, Mariella Devia, and many other younger artists of the last generation.

He has worked with Alberto Zedda, Gustav Kuhn, Lü Jia, Antonello Allemandi, Paolo Olmi, Maurizio Barbacini, Patrick Fournillier, Mario Mariotti, Carlo Rizzi, Dario Fo, Giorgio Strehler, Luca Ronconi, Michael Hampe, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Graham Vick, and other famous directors and conductors.

As a coach both for singers and accompanists, he has been invited by different schools and theaters such as Bologna Opera School, Maggio Fiorentino Academy, Madrid Royal Theatre, Madrid Higher Academy of Singing, University of Jaén, Opera Studio of Tel Aviv, and Academy of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

Among recent and future engagements: a tour of recitals with Olga Peretyatko, Erwin Schrott, Dimitry Korchak, Pietro Spagnoli, and Luca Pisaroni (Madrid, Barcelona, Pesaro, Moscow, Lausanne, Toulouse, Vienna State Opera, and La Scala Theatre), Rossini’s La Cenerentola at the Israeli Opera, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale at the Glyndebourne Festival and at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and Rossini’s La donna del lago and Ricciardo e Zoraide at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro.

Since 2013, he has been the artistic director of the Young Artists Programme at the Tenerife Opera.
