Angela Gheorghiu
Angela Gheorghiu graduated from the Romanian National University of Music in Bucharest, where she studied under Mia Barbu.
Her international career started with her debut at the Royal Opera House in London in 1992, when she sang Mimì in Puccini’s La Bohème. In the same year, she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera and at the Vienna State Opera. It was at the Royal Opera House that she first sang Verdi’s La traviata in 1994. Since then, the singer has been in constant demand in opera houses and concert halls around the world: New York, London, Paris, Salzburg, Berlin, Tokyo, Rome, Seoul, Venice, Athens, Monte Carlo, Chicago, Philadelphia, São Paulo, Los Angeles, Lisbon, Valencia, Baalbek, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, Zürich, Vienna, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Prague, Montreal, Moscow, Taipei, San Juan, Ljubljana, Buenos Aires, Melbourne, Sydney and others.
Her most celebrated répertoire includes Puccini’s La rondine, Tosca, Gianni Schicchi, and La Bohème, and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette and Faust, Verdi’s Il trovatore, Simon Boccanegra and La traviata, Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, Bizet’s Carmen, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, and Massenet’s Manon and Werther among others.
The singer has exclusive contracts with Decca and EVI Classics. She has recorded La traviata with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, L’elisir d’amore with the Lyon Opera Orchestra, arias with the Turin Royal Theatre Orchestra, La Bohème with La Scala Orchestra, Verdi Heroines with the Milan Symphony Orchestra “Giuseppe Verdi”, My World and Mysterium with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, two albums of duets and arias with Roberto Alagna (with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra), rarely recorded La rondine, Werther, and Il trovatore with the London Symphony Orchestra, Manon with La Monnaie Orchestra, Roméo et Juliette and Carmen with the Toulouse Capitole Orchestra, Verdi’s Requiem with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as Mascagni’s L’Amico Fritz, Giordano’s Fedora, and Gianni Schicchi, a recital of Puccini, a collection of beloved opera arias from French and Italian repertoire Homage to Maria Callas, 8 CD + 1DVD box set Autograph, celebrating 25 years of Angela Gheorghiu’s career, and the Verismo album Eternamente. Numerous performances and concerts starring Angela Gheorghiu were recorded, broadcasted and released on DVD. Many of her CDs have been awarded with prestigious prizes.
In 1999, she took part in a concert “Michael Jackson and Friends” in Munich. Later she sang at the reopenings of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (1999) and of the Malibran Theatre in Venice (2001) and at the opening of the new opera house in Valencia (2005). In 2002, she sang at the historic performance Prom at the Palace, which marked the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. In 2003, she performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. In 2006, she opened the Film Festival in Cannes. In 2007, she performed the title role in the world première of Marius et Fanny by Vladimir Cosma at the Marseille Opera. In 2011, she sang at the reopening of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and opened the open-air in the Katara Amphitheatre in Doha (Qatar), singing music composed by Vangelis especially for her. In 2017, she celebrated her 25th anniversary with the Royal Opera House performing Adriana Lecouvreur in the 150th performance of the opera on Covent Garden’s stage and took part at the Luciano Pavarotti 10th anniversary concert at Arena di Verona, performing with Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Il Volo, and Massimo Ranieri. She also performed the title role in the movie Tosca, directed by Benoit Jacquot and interpreted Juliette in the movie Roméo et Juliette released on DVD by Online Classics.
