Vladimir Medinsky to chair theatre’s Board of Trustees

On 27 October, immediately before the gala concert to mark the theatre’s 180th anniversary, a session of the new Board of Trustees was held. The Chairman of the Board is now Vladimir Medinsky, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation.

„I love the Mikhailovsky Theatre — it has a great future, it is a theatre that is full of life“, said the minister, noting that the Mikhailovsky, as one of the former imperial theatres along with the Bolshoi and Mariinsky, bears its lofty title with dignity.

In turn, Vladimir Kekhman, the theatre’s General Director, said he was grateful to Vladimir Medinsky and the new Board of Trustees for their willingness to assist in meeting the challenges currently facing the theatre. „The stage area is in urgent need of modernization“, he remarked, „and this will require the combined efforts of the city and the federal authorities. We would like the theatre’s touring activities to be extended and given a solid backing. I am very much counting on the minister’s help in integrating the theatre’s touring plans into the federal programme for tours by leading theatres in the Russian regions.“

Vladimir Kozhin, Head of the Presidential Property Management Department, remains Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees, which now includes Lyubov Sovershaeva, Deputy Plenipotentiary Presidential Representative in the Northwestern Federal District; Vasily Kichedzhi, Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg; Maxim Sokolov, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation; Lev Dodin, People’s Artist of Russia and Artistic Director of the Academic Maly Theatre; Elena Kalnitskaya, Director of the Peterhof Museum Reserve; and businessman Sergey Adonyev.

The Mikhailovsky Theatre Board of Trustees was formed in 2008. According to Vladimir Kekhman, it has made „a huge contribution to the Mikhailovsky becoming the most successful theatre in St. Petersburg, in both artistic and financial respects, and to its great acclaim in Russia and throughout the world.“ Mr. Kekhman expressed his particular gratitude to Ilya Klebanov, the outgoing Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
