Violeta Urmana in Cavalleria rusticana
Lithuanian soprano Violeta Urmana’s performance in Cavalleria rusticana on 1 June promises to be a memorable event for opera lovers. Urmana sang Santuzza at the Mikhailovsky Theatre six months ago in a production dedicated to Elena Obraztsova. Nezavisimaya Gazeta wrote that the singer gave a highly evocative performance on that evening, while Izvestia noted that “there was no need for Urmana to force her voice, artificially increasing her ‘passion potency’, as her well-defined, rounded and versatile voice was wielded as a compelling and dramatic instrument of its own.”
On this occasion, Urmana’s stage partner will be Italian tenor Stefano La Colla, already familiar to Mikhailovsky Theatre audiences for his roles as des Grieux in Manon Lescaut and Cavaradossi in Tosca. On 1 June he will be playing the part of Turiddu. The orchestra will be conducted by Dmitri Jurowski of the world-famous Jurowski musical dynasty.
