Victory: With Pain and Pride

On 9 May, the Mikhailovsky Theatre is inviting audiences of all generations to a special programme entitled Victory: With Pain and Pride. There will be performances of wartime songs, as well as the children’s opera Brundibár, which covers one of the most dramatic chapters in the history of the Second World War.

Well-known and much-loved Soviet songs such as Katyusha, Tyemnaya Noch (Dark is the Night), and Smuglyanka will serve as reminders of the heroism of the people, unity, and the power of the human spirit. These songs will be interspersed with musical sequences from popular films. The concert will feature opera soloists spanning several generations, including People’s Artist of Russia Nikolay Kopylov, Marina Tregubovich, Svetlana Monchak, Ekaterina Fenina, Boris Pinkhasovich, Boris Stepanov, and Alexander Shakhov.

Hans Krása’s opera Brundibár, a composition with a dramatic history, was first performed at the Theresienstadt concentration camp (camp of Terezín). The performance will feature young soloists from the Children’s Choir of St. Petersburg TV and Radio, with Boris Pinkhasovich in the only adult role. Choir musical director: Igor Gribkov. Conductor: Igor Tomashevsky.
