Veronika Dzhioeva in Manon Lescaut

On 17 February, Veronika Dzhioeva will star in the title role of Puccini’s opera “Manon Lescaut”. For the singer who conquered the best stages of the world, the first cooperation with the Mikhailovsky Theatre promises to be an important artistic experience.

“For me, it’ll be a double debut: a debut at the Mikhailovsky Theatre and a debut as Manon Lescaut”, the prima donna says. “I am considered to be a Puccini and Verdi singer, and it will be a big step in my career. The role is very serious, it needs a serious approach: the cast must be strong. For me, this is a very great joy and a very serious step”.

Veronica Dzhioeva, a graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatory, soloist of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, Honored Artist of Russia, People’s Artist of North and South Ossetia, is rarely heard in St Petersburg. A welcome guest of the leading opera houses, she plans her performances for years to come. Critics claim that the prima donna, “who made millions of people fall in love with her, has a ‘thick’, flying voice, rich in contrasts, in which black and red, heavenly pleasure and death mix together”.

“Manon is somewhat similar to me,” Veronika Dzhioeva admits. “There are moments in the opera when I recognize myself. Passion and versatility, the way she treats her life: one moment there is a tragedy and in a second she has already come to her senses, she sees a new dress — and she’s in a totally different mood. She is a real woman who loves beauty and jewellery. I have sung many similar roles: Thais and Manon in the operas by Jules Massenet, Verdi’s ‘La traviata’. I think it will be easy for me to create the character. I know her from the stage and from life, I feel her.”
