The tour of the renowned American Complexions Contemporary Ballet
On May 7 and 8, the Mikhailovsky Theatre is to host the St Petersburg debut of Complexions Contemporary Ballet.
The company based in New York City was founded in 1994 by Artistic Directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, the two former principal dancers of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Dwight Rhoden, now Resident Choreographer of Complexions, has established a remarkably wide-ranging career, earning distinction from The New York Times as “one of the most sought out choreographers of the day.” His ballets are danced not only by Complexions but by many outstanding dancers of America, Europe and Russia.
Hailed by the New York Times as one of the great modern dancers of his time, Desmond Richardson, the Co-founder of the Company, is a multi-talented artist, who managed both to dance the roles of classical and contemporary repertoire and to perform with such musical artists as Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna. The company’s foremost innovation is that dance should be about removing boundaries, not reinforcing them. Whether it be the limiting traditions of a single style, period, venue, or culture, Complexions transcends them all, creating an open, continually evolving form of dance.
The program includes:
Mercy (2009) Choreography by Dwight Rhoden, music by various artists
Hissy fits (2006) Choreography by Dwight Rhoden, music by J.S.Bach
Rise (2008) Choreography by Dwight Rhoden, music by U2
