The opera Brundibár. The lesson of humanism
The opera Brundibár will be performed at the Hermitage Theatre and Mikhailovsky Theatre as a tribute to those who fought against fascism and a lesson in humanism for the current generation. The history of the piece itself is unique in the world of opera, as it was first put on in 1943 by young prisoners of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, an event that would go down in history of the WWII. Today the work is considered a symbol of endurance and resistance the world over.
On 27 January, both the anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi Siege and International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a concert performance of Brundibár will be presented on the stage of the Hermitage Theatre. This will be the first production of the opera’s Russian-language version to come to St. Petersburg.
On 9 May, the Mikhailovsky Theatre will present the Russian stage premiere of the opera to mark Victory Day.
The opera will be performed by the Mikhailovsky Theatre orchestra and soloists together with the St. Petersburg Children’s choir for Television and Radio.
