The Onegin National Opera Awards

On 16 November, the Onegin National Opera Awards will be presented for the third time at a gala ceremony held on the stage of the Mikhailovsky Theatre.

It is no coincidence that our own theatre will be the venue for this exciting celebration of opera. This important event in Russia’s musical life will coincide with the Mikhailovsky’s 185th anniversary: it was on 8 November 1833 that the theatre first opened its doors to the public. The evening will see nominees from all over Russia gather on Arts Square, with nearly 80 singers from more than 30 Russian opera houses taking part in the competition.

The Onegin Awards were founded in 2016 with the goal of promoting Russian opera. The Awards will be presented as part of the 7th St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum.

An expert panel met on 2 October to decide on a shortlist of nominees. The competition includes seven categories: Male Debut, Female Debut, Prima Donna, Primo Uomo, Guest (awarded to a representative of another country who has brought something new to Russian opera), Collective, and Supporting Role. The special categories, Theatre, Event, Legend, Spirit of the Opera, Best Concertmaster, and From Russia with Love, recognize the contribution of teams, directors, and prominent figures in the world of opera to the development of the art form.

This year, the Mikhailovsky Theatre is represented in the Collective category: the panel of experts was impressed by the work of Boris Pinkhasovich, Sergey Kuzmin, Karen Akopov, Alexander Bezrukov, and Ekaterina Fenina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

Among the special guests attending the awards ceremony will be two stars of Italian opera, the outstanding bel canto virtuosos Ruggero Raimondi and Patrizia Ciofi. They will be joined by another guest of honour, the opera journalist, singer, director, author of books on music, and radio presenter Enrico Stinchelli. His radio show on opera, La Barcaccia, has been on the air for no fewer than 30 years, and is one of the longest-running radio programmes in Italy. The awards ceremony will be presented by Sati Spivakova and Yulian Makarov.

Guests can look forward to a gala concert given by Veronika Dzhioeva, Ekaterina Gubanova, Olga Peretyatko, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, Dmitry Ulyanov, Sergey Murzaev, and Liparit Avetisyan, together with nominees and prizewinners from previous years.
