The Mikhailovsky Theatre Grand Prix 2010
On 19-21 November 2010 the second annual competition of students of the major Russian ballet schools — the Mikhailovsky Theatre Grand Prix — will take place at the theatre.
The original purpose of the initiative was to draw attention to the current state of ballet education in Russia. Later it has grown to become a tradition.
The students of the principal ballet schools of Russia will appear on the Mikhailovsky stage to show the results of hard toil — both theirs and their teachers’. The three leading ballet schools of Russia will participate in the contest: the Vaganova Ballet Academy, the Novosibirsk and Perm Ballet Colleges.
Vladimir Kekhman, the chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Grand Prix, General Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre: “Russian ballet education has great potential. Our ballet schools provide the companies all over the world with their graduates. In order to keep the profession of ballet dancer popular in Russia, in order to let ballet students know they can make a career in this country, we need artistic events such as the Mikhailovsky Theatre Grand Prix. Participation in the contest which includes the choreography of today and tomorrow will give the young dancers a possibility to feel the taste of glory and the moments of artistic happiness, to make a request for a successful artistic career in this country.”
This year in the framework of the Grand Prix the Moscow Music Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Ballet Company will present the ballets by the outstanding contemporary choreographers: Sechs Tänze and Petite Mort by Jiří Kylián, and Na Floresta by Nacho Duato.
The Mikhailovsky Theatre will show the ballet In a Minor Key by the young choreographer Slava Samodurov. On 21 November the Mikhailovsky Grand Prix will be crowned with the world stars ballet gala Hommage à Roland Petit. The principals of the Bolshoi Ballet, La Scala Ballet, The Paris Opera and The Rome Opera will perform the ballets by the classic of the 20th century.
The Mikhailovsky Grand Prix is supported by the St Petersburg Administration; vice-governor of St Petersburg Alla Manilova is a member of the Organizing Committee. The Grand Hotel Europe is the General Partner of the Grand Prix and for three days it will be a home to the participants of the contest.
