The Mikhailovsky Theatre Concludes Its Tour of Canada

The ballet company has returned home after performing in Vancouver. The theatre’s first visit to the North American continent was a complete triumph. Canadian audiences received Swan Lake with enthusiasm, calling the production “amazing” and “breathtaking”.

“The company’s production of the classic Russian ballet is entertaining from start to finish, with stellar dancing and sumptuous costumes”, wrote the Vancouver Sun, picking out Oksana Bondareva’s performance in the lead role: “[As Odette] she danced with intense emotion and managed to convey the lightness of a swan ruffling its wings... As Odile, she danced with the kind of subtle passion equal to the sparkly streaks of red in her black tutu”. Theatregoers described Oksana Bondareva as “a real Swan Queen”.

Canadian critics referred to Leonid Sarafanov’s performance of Siegfried as “regal”. “On his jumps, he landed soundlessly... and (in his mime-acting) conveys complex and genuine emotions, especially remorse and distress (Vancouver Sun).

The young dancer, Victor Lebedev, was likened to “a delicate schoolboy paired with this Odette”, and the orchestra, conducted by Valery Ovsyanikov, was described as being “as adept at holding back with the soft, fluttering strings as it is at letting loose on the thunderous siss-boom-bahs” (Straight.com).

Internet users flooded the web with exhortations not to miss the St. Petersburg production, in addition to rapturous comments about the performance.
