The Mikhailovsky Moscow Tour received critical acclaim

On 18-22 March 2011 in Moscow the Mikhailovsky Theatre presented the best productions of the season 2009/10 in the framework of the Golden Mask Festival.

The opera La Juive, ballets Swan Lake, In a Minor Key, and a double bill by Nacho Duato which included Duende and Without Words were shown at the Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre. The house was full, the tickets had been sold out long before the performances.

The opera La Juive was a great success despite the fact that the atmosphere was extremely nervous: the score of the opera was accidentally taken away by the Mariinsky Theatre. Luckily, the indispensable score was caught on the way to St Petersburg and taken back to the theatre: they managed to come almost on time, the performance delayed for half an hour. Vedomosti newspaper (March 22) noticed that ‘the collective nervousness, common for all the theatre people on the brink of failure of the common business, turned into enthusiasm, and the performance received the new energy.’ The critics highly appreciated the work of the soloists: Natalia Mironova (Eudoxie), Neil Shicoff (Eléazar).

The public was impressed by the ballet Swan Lake. It drew the full house and Moscow met the ballet with ‘tremor and unrevealed alarm’ (Kommersant, March 23). Ekaterina Borchenko (‘the kind of ballerina that Moscow theatres lack’) who danced the role of Odette-Odile was highly praised.

Duende and Without Words, the one-act ballets by the new Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Ballet, were also included in the tour programme. Novye Izvestia (March 22) hailed the choreographer as a great master and admitted that ‘the beauty of his works is really stunning.’ The newspapers also quote the choreographer describing ‘the atmosphere of mutual understanding’ in the theatre.

The Mikhailovsky Theatre productions are nominated in 12 categories of the prestigious Golden Mask Awards.
