The Golden Mask Festival
At the Golden Mask Festival in Moscow, the Mikhailovsky Theatre will present the productions that have been nominated for the nation’s most prestigious theatre awards. Last season’s premières received a record 22 nominations. Moscow offered the best stages on which to perform the festival productions.
On 4 February, the Theatre’s opera company will present Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer on the Bolshoi Theatre’s new stage. The production has been nominated for Golden Mask awards in five categories: “Best Opera Production”, “Best Conductor in Opera” (Vasily Petrenko), “Best Director in Opera” (Vasily Barkhatov), “Best Actress in Opera” (Asmik Grigorian in the role of Senta), and “Best Actor in Opera” (Dmitry Golovnin in the role of Erik).
On 6 February, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin will be performed on the Bolshoi Theatre’s new stage. This sensational production has been nominated for Golden Mask awards in seven categories, including “Best Opera Production”, “Best Director in Opera” (Andriy Zholdak), “Best Designer in Musical Theatre” (Monika Pormale and Andriy Zholdak), “Best Costume Designer in Musical Theatre” (Rolands Peterkops, Marite Mastina-Peterkopa), and “Best Light Designer in Musical Theatre” (A.J. Weissbard). Golden Mask nominees among the production’s performers include Tatiana Ryaguzova (“Best Actress in Opera” in the role of Tatiana) and Evgeny Akhmedov (“Best Actor in Opera” in the role of Lensky).
Last season’s final première, the ballet The Flames of Paris, will be performed at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre on 18 March. The production has been nominated for “Best Ballet Production”, while Mikhail Messerer has been nominated in the “Best Balletmaster” category, and Oksana Bondareva, who performs the role of Jeanne, in the “Best Actress in Ballet” category.
The ballet Romeo and Juliet has been nominated in four categories (“Best Ballet Production”, “Best Conductor in Ballet”, “Best Actress in Ballet”, and “Best Actor in Ballet”), and will be performed during the Golden Mask Festival on the Theatre’s home stage in St. Petersburg. This decision was reached in agreement with Natalia Osipova, who will dance the role of Juliet, taking to the stage for the performance at the Mikhailovsky Theatre on 5 March.
