The Farukh Ruzimatov Gala Concert
12 June

“Ruzimatov’s appearance on stage is an incessant culmination” is one of the rapturous reviews that have accompanied the great dancer throughout his entire career.

“When I perform a role, I never attempt to penetrate the character or transform myself into him”, said Farukh Ruzimatov in one interview. “I have always portrayed myself. What you see on the stage is only my experiences, my emotions and feelings. It is my own inner world that I bring to the stage.”

A surprise for the audience at the gala concert will be the choreographic composition Tahar and the Free Men, which premiered last spring in the French town of Annecy. The ballet is based on actual events involving members of the Kabyle tribe (Berber warriors). The part of Tahar, the leader of the rebels in their fight against French colonization, is a perfect fit for Farukh Ruzimatov. In this role he fully embodies the thesis of the ballet critics, who for many years have regularly used two phrases to characterize his performance: 'elitist' and 'Eastern savagery'. The dancer’s flowing movements and innate magnetism draw the audience into his every gesture, motion, and facial expression. The vocal part will be performed by Azal Belkadi, one of the few guardians of the culture of the Kabyle, who can trace their origins back to the days of Carthage and Troy. He will sing ancient Berber chants. Among the other participants will be Bolshoi Theatre prima ballerina Maria Allash, and Mariinsky Theatre principal dancer Igor Kolb.
