The Brass Section
On 19 March, we will be holding a concert entitled Music for Brass Instruments in the dress circle foyer. Its main objective is to acquaint listeners with the brass section of the orchestra. The evening’s programme includes well-known and popular pieces of music that listeners will have no difficulty recognizing: excerpts from the operas Carmen, La Bohème and Die Zauberflöte, and from the ballet Romeo and Juliet.
“‘Oh, the horns!’ — that’s how listeners often see the brass section of the orchestra,” says trumpet player Mikhail Khasin, the brains behind the musical evening. “We want to put brass instruments in the spotlight and tell listeners about the unique characteristics of each instrument. But we also want to show what these instruments are capable of when played together in an ensemble,” says Khasin. “Between musical performances, our audience will be regaled with brief and light-hearted stories about each instrument and its development. There will be no room for dry, academic lectures; these will be informal and entertaining narratives.”
Seven musicians will take part in the concert, each performing individually. In the finale, all the musicians will perform together as an ensemble.
