Stars to come out for Onegin Awards

Queen of bel canto Angela Gheorghiu and spine-tingling mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina will be taking to the Mikhailovsky Theatre stage in a gala concert on 1 December. The performances by these world-renowned stars will be the jewel in the crown of the Onegin National Opera Awards ceremony. Our hosts for the evening will be the captivating Sati Spivakova and the irresistible Fyodor Bondarchuk.

For the fourth time, soloists from opera houses across Russia will come together to look back on the past year in opera. The coveted statuettes depicting the eponymous hero of Russia’s favourite opera will be awarded to 16 singers across the competition’s nine traditional and seven special categories. Hosting the Onegin awards ceremony is becoming a much-loved tradition at the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Last year, Russian Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky, Chief of the Presidential Directorate for Social Projects and opera director Sergey Novikov, and General Director of the Bolshoi Theatre Vladimir Urin all took to the stage to congratulate the winners. This year’s line-up of special guests is shaping up to be just as impressive.
