Stars Participate in Dresden – St. Petersburg Opera Gala

On 7 July the Mikhailovsky Theatre is staging a gala concert of opera stars to mark the 50th anniversary of the twinning of the cities of Dresden and St. Petersburg. The concert will be conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. It will feature world-renowned singers, including the German bass René Pape, the American tenor Neil Shicoff, and the Swedish soprano Iréne Theorin. The Russian vocal school will be represented by the legendary Elena Obraztsova and Sergei Leiferkus.

The gala concert, entitled ‘A Bridge Between Dresden and St. Petersburg’, will reflect the musical traditions of both cities. The programme for the concert has been compiled by Vladimir Jurowski, a member of a famous dynasty of composers and conductors. He studied in the Higher Music Schools of Dresden and Berlin and has worked in Germany for many years. His collaboration with the Dresden Opera is a highlight of that celebrated theatre’s history.

Each of the singers Vladimir Jurowski has invited to take part in the concert is a member of the world operatic elite.René Pape is a leading soloist in the Berlin State Opera and a guest soloist for the Metropolitan Opera. Critics have called him “one of the leading basses of the new generation”. Irené Theorin is a star of the Royal Opera in Copenhagen.

The Mikhailovsky Theatre has played an important part in the careers of many of the stars appearing in the gala concert. The world famous tenor Neil Shicoff, who sings in leading opera houses on both sides of the Atlantic, won the ‘Golden Mask’ — the Russian national theatre prize — this year for his performance of the part of Eléazar in the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s production of La Juive. The gifted Russian baritone Sergei Leferkus, who has made a name for himself in opera houses around the world, appeared at the Mikhailovsky Theatre early in his career. Elena Obraztsova, a legendary performer in Russian opera, also has close ties with the theatre, having previously acted as Artistic Director of the theatre’s opera company. Coincidentally, Elena Obraztsova celebrates her birthday on the day of the concert.

A unique programme awaits our international audience, which will include prominent figures from the worlds of politics, business, and culture. The concert will feature choral and orchestral excerpts, and arias from Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades and Eugene Onegin, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, Wagner’s Der fliegende Hollander, Lohengrin, Tannhauser and Tristan und Isolde, Rachmaninoff’s Aleko, Prokofiev’s War and Peace and Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier.

The concert is taking place under the patronage of the Governor of St. Petersburg, Valentina Matviyenko.
