School holiday programme
As schoolchildren start to count down the days until the autumn break, we’d like to remind parents that the holidays are a great time to enjoy a family trip to the theatre. Our productions will give you lasting memories, awaken your imagination, and transport you from rainy St. Petersburg to a fantasy world of magical melodies, fairytale transformations, and mischievous pranks. They will also allow children to discover true masterpieces of world theatre:
The Nutcracker (29 and 30 October), Swan Lake (2 and 3 November), Il barbiere di Siviglia (4 November), and Spartacus (5 and 6 November). Tickets are on sale now!
The first performance of the school holidays will be The Nutcracker (29 and 30 October). The enchanting music of Tchaikovsky and the magic of this much-loved Christmas fairy tale will captivate children in a whirlwind of wonders, and remind adults of a childhood belief in miracles and the power of dreams. Nacho Duato’s ballet, a consistent hit during the festive season, awaits you at the Mikhailovsky Theatre this autumn.
Duato’s version of Swan Lake (2 and 3 November) will open November’s ballet programme. This eternal classic has stood the test of time and still enthralls audiences of all ages. While the mystery of the masterpiece remains unsolved, discovering new meanings in it is more than just an exciting game. It’s also the unforgettable experience of another encounter with this most beautiful symbol of Russian ballet.
The playful Il barbiere di Siviglia (4 November) is perfect for even the youngest theatregoers. Carnival transformations, sharp-witted shenanigans, and Gioacchino Rossini’s sparkling music all encapsulate the spirit of childlike joy and carefree fun. What’s more, alongside the venerable Beaumarchais’s characters, the stage of the Mikhailovsky Theatre will be graced by footballers, pop stars, flamenco dancers, guitarists, and even... a monkey, a donkey, and a small blue dog. Staged by Eric Vigié, this fun-filled opera is guaranteed to put you in a good mood and definitely won’t leave you bored.
Older children can look forward to the most breathtak ing production in our ballet repertoire. Spartacus (5 and 6 November) — the story of the legendary hero of ancient Rome, with magnificent processions, gladiator battles, and a live tigress — is always popular with the younger generation. This true ballet blockbuster, with all its stunning spectacle and almost cinematic special effects, raises eternal questions about the boundaries of good and evil, friendship and betrayal, faith, and the struggle for justice.
