Premiere of Dvořák’s Rusalka
30-31.10.2009
Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák is the first opera premiere of the season.
A spectacular, poetic, action-packed performance tells story of love of Rusalka (mermaid) and Prince, who met at a crossroads between fantastic world and the human life and passed a test. Although the opera is full of mythological characters like the Water-Sprite, Ježibaba (the witch) and others,
it’s not a fairy-tale for children but a serious story of tragic love, betrayal, revenge and mercy.
‘Rusalka is an example of high music culture; the wonderful melodies, full of Slavic poetics and lyricism, are developed in the framework of classical music’, comments the premiere Peter Feranec, Musical Director of the production and Principal Conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre.
The production is staged by the famous drama director Igor Konyayev and it has become his first work in musical theatre. ‘People have no other remedy against death except love’, the stage director explains.
