Orchestra on Palace Square

The classics have always played a prominent role in St. Petersburg’s extensive cultural repertoire. On the anniversary of the founding of this great city, the Mikhailovsky Theatre orchestra, conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov, will celebrate this glorious classical tradition.

The gala concert, Classics on Palace Square, will take place on 27 May. Icons of international opera will perform alongside the golden voices of the Russian vocal school, with appearances from Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Sonya Yoncheva, Veronika Dzhioeva, Yulia Matochkina, Marcelo Álvarez, Danielle de Niese, Alexey Tatarintsev, and Sergei Skorokhodov. The works of Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Strauss, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Legara, Kálmán, and other musical geniuses, will resound.

In the years since its inauguration, the Classics on Palace Square gala concert has become a firm favourite, even among those who usually feign a horror of large-scale public events. Every performance of this breathtaking evening is transformed into a mini-extravaganza of luxurious costumes and lavish theatricality. In this open-air setting, against the striking architecture of a world heritage site, St. Petersburg infuses the concert with particular charm.

Around 40,000 people will be able to experience the concert on Palace Square in person. Early estimates suggest that more than half a million viewers will watch the concert live on television.
