Opera season draws to a close
The Mikhailovsky Theatre opera season will soon come to a close. The powerful final cadence will take the form of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida. The grandiose opera by the great Italian master will be performed on 16 July, conducted by Alevtina Ioffe.
Ksenia Dudnikova will play the role of the Pharaoh’s daughter, Amneris. The soloist from the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre has been called “the star of the new generation”, and her gorgeous mezzo-soprano voice is confidently conquering the opera world. Audiences in Paris and London fell in love with the singer, and in Moscow she enjoyed resounding success following the premiere of Sadko at the Bolshoi Theatre. The production was directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov, who invited Dudnikova to play Volkhov. Amneris is one of the singer’s crowning roles. She performed it at the very beginning of her career, and more recently the entire musical world followed the broadcast of the new production of Aida from the Paris Opera, where Dudnikova sang as Amneris alongside the opera greats Sondra Radvanovsky as Aida and Jonas Kaufmann as Radames. In the Mikhailovsky staging, Fyodor Ataskevich will play the role of commander Radames. Aida is an opera of strong passions, and the production, laced with exquisite metaphor, which premiered in autumn 2019, serves as a magnificent setting for the wonderful music.
We are also inviting opera fans to experience Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata on 4 July. Anastasia Barun, Sergey Kuzmin, and Dmitry Darov will perform in this operatic psychological drama based on The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas fils. On 8 July, our stage will play host to Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, with Fyodor Ataskevich as Mario Cavaradossi and Alexander Kuznetsov as Scarpia; the title role will be performed by Maria Litke. The performance will be conducted by Alevtina Ioffe. On 12 July, Tchaikovsky’s Oprichnik, directed by Alexander Soloviev, will feature Sergey Kuzmin, Valentina Fedeneva, Ekaterina Egorova, and Alexey Tikhomirov, continuing our series of premiere productions. Oprichnik premiered on 18 May, a performance that has been recognized as one of the most important events in the Russian musical season.
