Opening of the opera season
The Mikhailovsky Theatre’s opera season opens on 16 September, when last season’s most exciting première, Tchaikovsky’s The Oprichnik directed by Sergey Novikov, will once again take to the stage.
Critics have praised this production, which is steeped in classical tradition, as a “brilliant blockbuster” with something to offer both music lovers, who will appreciate the opportunity to hear one of Tchaikovsky’s rarely performed works, and the general public, who want their operas full of “love and death”. The opera is set in a complex historical context that will nevertheless be understood by audiences of any age, and will acquaint opera fans with the “nature of governance” in the era of Ivan the Terrible. The production will star Sergey Kuzmin, Valentina Fedeneva, Sophia Fainberg, Ekaterina Egorova, and Alexander Kuznetsov, with Alexander Soloviev, Principal Conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre, wielding the baton.
Our stage will also play host to two of Verdi’s masterpieces this September: La traviata and Aida. The productions will be directed by Alevtina Ioffe, Musical Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre, and will feature some of the stars of our opera company. On 21 September, the role of Violetta Valéry in La traviata will be performed by the winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition, the brilliant coloratura soprano Svetlana Moskalenko. On 24 September, Aida’s Amneris will be sung by one of the most popular mezzo-sopranos in opera today, Olesya Petrova, with the magnificent Maria Litke in the title role.
