Olesya Novikova and Leonid Sarafanov in La Bayadère

On July 8, Olesya Novikova will dance the part of Nikiya in the season’s final performance of La Bayadère.

A graduate of the Academy of Russian Ballet and winner of the Vaganova Prix, Olesya Novikova has attracted attention since the very beginning of her professional life. In the opinion of ballet experts, she has the ability to demonstrate the “dance of light breath”. Elegant, gracefully responsive, and sensitive to nuances, the ballerina performs successfully in classical productions and responds with enthusiasm to bold experiments. With her participation, the Mariinsky Theatre’s productions of Giselle, Don Quixote or Ondine can be compared with the work of Balanchine, Forsythe or Ratmansky.

La Bayadère was specifically chosen for her debut at the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Nikiya in La Bayadère is a most difficult role, which demands equal measures of acting nuance in the dance itself and also impeccable technique to execute the classical steps’ ‘diamond faceting’. Ballet critics have no doubt: Olesya Novikova possesses a level of skill that matches “the highest level of technique, when her perfection is not demonstrative, but comes naturally to her”.

Olesya Novikova will be partnered by Leonid Sarafanov, an unfaithful lover according to the plot, but in real life, a loving husband. This family duet, according to Nezavisimaya Gazeta, bring ballet “to a phenomenal level of technical and emotional co-ordination”.
