New Year, Italian-Style
31 December
The festive period is a time of gift-giving, and as per tradition, on New Year’s Eve, maestro Vasily Petrenko will have a treat in store for visitors to the Mikhailovsky Theatre. A brilliant musician, Petrenko began his career here, becoming the theatre’s Principal Guest Conductor in 2012. As such, he has put together a holiday concert programme that will be a genuinely exciting and unforgettable event.
This year the New Year Concert has a definite Italian flavour. On the programme are Ottorino Respighi’s Le fontane di Roma, I pini di Roma, and Feste romane, as well as arias from Italian operas sung by Barbara Frittoli, a true star of the opera scene, whose appearance will be eagerly awaited by lovers of vocal music, due to her magnificent Verdi-esque soprano. A graduate of the Milan Conservatory and winner of several international competitions, Barbara Frittoli belongs to the world’s top-ranking opera performers. Her engagements include performances on the world’s leading stages. She sings at La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna Opera, and the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden. For the New Year concert at the Mikhailovsky Theatre, Barbara Frittoli will perform arias from Giuseppe Verdi’s operas Othello and Il trovatore, Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, and La Wally by Catalani. The orchestral poems of Respighi are an exquisite pleasure both for listeners as well as for musicians. They are composed of impressionistic brilliance, exquisite orchestration, and combined neoclassical and archaic melodics. Incidentally, Respighi was a friend of the great opera composer Giacomo Puccini, from whom he received the first copy of each of the composer’s new scores, and always admired his unsurpassed art of instrumentation.
Captivating melodies and enchanting vocal fiorituras, orchestral brilliance and emotional chords: this sonorous cocktail will create an unforgettable atmosphere and will make a superb prologue to the magic of New Year’s Eve. Only guests who obtain tickets in advance will be able to attend this fabulous concert, as Vasily Petrenko’s New Year surprise is reserved for the most devoted and discerning.
