New Year holidays
This holiday season, the Mikhailovsky Theatre will delight audiences with the best performances in its repertoire, in particular those traditionally enjoyed by all the family or in the company of friends.
The sparkling melodies and carnival transformations of Il barbiere di Siviglia will set the perfect tone for New Year joy and reverie. The production will strike the final chord of the old year and the opening note of the new, a year in which our opera company, whose history began with Il barbiere di Siviglia, will celebrate its centenary. Beaumarchais’ protagonists will take to the stage six hours before midnight on 31 December and greet the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s first audience of 2018 on the evening of 2 January.
La Sylphide will grace our stage twice on 3 January. The ballet will prompt adults to reflect on the fragility of a dream, and entice children with the notion of bringing woodland fairies into the real world. On 4 January, Boris Asafiev’s musical retelling of Cinderella will leave children with unforgettable impressions of their first encounter with opera, one of the greatest triumphs of which, Verdi’s La traviata, also features in our holiday programme.
Children’s faith in miracles and the power of dreams will likewise be nurtured by traditional Christmas ballet The Nutcracker, as Tchaikovsky’s magical score whisks the audience away to a fairytale land surrounded in a whirl of wonder. Eight performances of the ballet in the production choreographed by Nacho Duato will be presented on the Mikhailovsky stage from 5 to 8 January.
