New Year at the Mikhailovsky Theatre

The scintillating melodies and carnival transformations of Gioachino Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia are in harmony with the delights and fantasies of New Year. Eric Vigié’s production of the opera will sound the final chord of 2019 and provide a bright start to 2020. Pierre Beaumarchais’s characters will appear on stage six hours before midnight on 31 December and will greet the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s first audience of 2020 on the evening of 2 January. The production will feature the Mikhailovsky opera company’s leading soloists and will be conducted by maestro Alexander Vedernikov.

Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet Cinderella, with choreography by Rostislav Zakharov, can be seen at the theatre from 3 to 7 January. The fairytale that everyone knows from childhood, in which the midnight hour is of particular importance — just as it is on New Year’s Eve — will be watched by more than 7,000 people! Many of them have already selected their seats in the auditorium, so with every hour that brings us closer to that time of carefree leisure and gaiety, the opportunity to enjoy these productions is becoming more illusory. Turning that opportunity into a reality requires just a few clicks on the theatre’s official website.

On the last day of the New Year holidays we invite our theatregoers to enjoy Die Zauberflöte, in a production by the well-known German theatrical designer and director Pet Halmen. Experienced theatregoers will be drawn into mazes of symbols and meanings by his bright, harmonious interpretation of Mozart’s opera, while children will discover a world of contrasts in which the values of the Enlightenment triumph.
