New appointments at Mikhailovsky Theatre
Alevtina Ioffe is standing down as Musical Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre, a position she has held since February 2021, for family reasons.
In 2021, the posts of Musical Director and Principal Conductor were divided up for the first time in the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s history. The theatre’s Principal Conductor is currently Alexander Soloviev, and from 1 July 2022, he will also serve as Musical Director.
The Mikhailovsky Theatre will also begin a collaboration with one of the music world’s brightest young stars : from 29 June 2022, Timur Zangiev will be our Principal Guest Conductor.
The maestro made his Mikhailovsky Theatre debut in May 2022 with Giacomo Puccini’s opera Tosca, and he will be conducting The Queen of Spades on 30 June.
Timur Zangiev first stepped onto the conductor’s podium aged just seven, when he conducted the Symphony Orchestra of the Vladikavkaz Philharmonic Hall. Today, he has over forty operas and ballets in his repertoire, as well as numerous symphonic works. Critics have noted his “delicate, very precise manner”. Timur Zangiev works with some of Russia’s leading theatres, including the Bolshoi Theatre, the Mariinsky Theatre, and the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre in Moscow.
Highlights of Zangiev’s recent work include his La Scala debut with The Queen of Spades, a production of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sadko at Russia’s Bolshoi Theatre (directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov), Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre in Moscow, and concerts with the Russian National Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, and the Evgeny Svetlanov State Academic Symphonic Orchestra.
