Nacho Duato on Stage
Nacho Duato is to appear on the Mikhailovsky Theatre stage for the first time as a dancer. In his ballet Multiplicity: Forms of Silence and Emptiness, he actually plays himself: a choreographer conducting a dialogue with a great composer.
The last time Nacho Duato appeared on stage was also in this role. That was in Moscow in July 2010, when Multiplicity was performed at the Chekhov International Theatre Festival.
“For me, Bach was the absolute, perfect composer. I consider his music one of the most brilliant phenomena in cultural history. When I was working on the ballet, I conducted an imaginary dialogue with Bach, attempting to obtain a deeper understanding of the nature of his art. The uncomfortable feeling I experienced in dealing with this divine music led to the germination of an idea: to go on stage to beg the maestro’s forgiveness for taking liberties with his work. I hope he will forgive me”.
The world-famous choreographer began his artistic career as a dancer. Audiences in many countries admired his unique movement and his charismatic roles.
“The decision to appear before the St. Petersburg public as a dancer was not an easy one to make. I realize that the peak of my performing career passed long ago. My resolution to go on stage for the first performances (on 21, 22, and 24 March) is backed up by the wonderful emotional lift that we all — the dancers and musicians of the Mikhailovsky Theatre — experienced when working on a ballet dedicated to the great Johann Sebastian Bach”.
