Last night of the opera season
The Mikhailovsky Theatre is closing its 189th opera season with Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata. This season’s final opera performance will take place on 23 July under the baton of Musical Director and Principal Conductor Alexander Soloviev.
La traviata is the world’s most performed opera, whose music captivates viewers from its opening notes to become a lifelong love. How has one little story been able to stir human hearts to such an extent for centuries now? The answer is simple: every single note is imbued with the feeling and inspiration of its great composer, Giuseppe Verdi.
Interest in the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s production, created with boundless respect for the composer’s original vision, has endured unabated for nearly three decades. During this time, more than one cast of performers has successfully captured our audiences’ hearts. The line-up on 23 July will be a star-studded one: Svetlana Moskalenko will perform the part of Violetta, while Sergey Kuzmin will appear as Alfredo. Dmitry Darov will play the role of Giorgio Germont.
Looking back on the latest opera season, which opened with the standout premiere of the previous season — Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera The Oprichnik, which toured in Moscow and gathered a number of prestigious theatre awards — we happily recall some exceptional performances from our company’s experienced professionals: Svetlana Moskalenko and Maria Litke, Olesya Petrova and Sofia Fainberg, Fyodor Ataskevich and Dmitry Golovnin, Boris Pinkhasovich, Alexander Kuznetsov, and Alexander Shakhov. We celebrate the brilliant debuts of Ekaterina Egorova, Anna Buslidze, Anastasia Barun, Anna Nalbandyants, and Damir Zakirov. We applaud the guest performers who graced not only the theatre’s repertoire productions, but also some stunning gala concerts. This theatrical year, the stars of world opera shone on our stage: Veronika Dzhioeva, Hibla Gerzmava, Olesya Petrova, Askar Abdrazakov, Roman Burdenko, and Kristian Benedikt.
The new, 190th season — a jubilee for the theatre — will also open with La traviata.
