Journey to the Country of Orchestria

In the new year, the Mikhailovsky Theatre will present a wonderful new subscription package for children: The Country of Orchestria. The package will consist of four interactive sessions and performances featuring our best musicians.

Using a playful format, our young visitors will be introduced to each and every instrument in the full symphony orchestra, not only learning about its history and how it sounds, but even getting the chance to touch the instrument and hold it in their own hands.

Accompanying the children through this magical land will be the merry and inquisitive Overtone and the beautiful Fairy of Harmony. The first stop on their wonder-filled route will be the city of Hammerburg. On its noisy streets, the little ones will learn about the very oldest musical instruments, put their own sense of rhythm to the test, and find out that even a drumbeat has a note of its own. The next city on the voyagers’ itinerary will be Stringbruck, whose natives are famed for the dexterity of their fingers and the acuteness of their hearing. The inhabitants of the third city, Trumpetdorf, know how to direct blasts of air and love to puff out their cheeks, but are still very pleasant to talk to. At the end of this great journey, the dwellers of all of these musical cities will gather together in Orchestria to show what they can do, and the children will help them.

Even the smallest journey changes a person, and any knowledge gained can give birth to new passions. So don’t be surprised if, on their return from Orchestria, your little one asks for a violin, or — brace yourself! — a drum kit. And we urge you not to stand in the way of these new beginnings, even if your plans for them hadn’t included becoming a second Rostropovich. Specialists in how the brain works are unanimous in their belief that even a superficial understanding of how musical pieces are structured can have an enormous influence on children’s cognitive abilities. Just like reading good literature, an understanding of musical notation helps to accelerate the development of abstract thought processes, which is directly linked to comprehension in the exact sciences — mathematics especially.

The subscription package is aimed at children aged from five to seven.

Please note that subscription packages include one accompanying adult at no extra.
