Ildikó Komlósi stars in Cavalleria rusticana

On 17 November, Ildikó Komlósi will sing the part of Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana at the Mikhailovsky Theatre for the first time. The Hungarian mezzo-soprano is well known to our regulars for her role as Azucena in Dmitri Tcherniakov’s phenomenal production of Il trovatore.

Komlósi’s original portrayal of Azucena was striking, majestic, and broke with all the traditional perceptions of the character. She managed to bring to the production not only a new intensity and sense of poignant mystery, but also a lot of glitz and glamour. It is no exaggeration to say that Russian critics were enchanted by the „voluptuous grande dame in black lace and a blonde wig.“ Musical experts saw in the Hungarian prima donna a „powerful actress“ and appreciated the strength of her lower register. They especially praised the „penetrative quality“ of her portrayal, capable of „piercing walls“ with its inner power.

In November, St. Petersburg theatregoers will have the opportunity to appreciate a radically different range of emotions which Ildikó Komlósi is able to command. Komlósi is well-versed in the intricacies of the young peasant girl Santuzza’s thoughts and motives, having sung the role at some of the world’s greatest opera houses, including the Arena di Verona and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. During her substantial performing career, Komlósi has worked with such masters of opera as Franco Zeffirelli, Luciano Pavarotti, Zubin Mehta, and Antonio Pappano, to name but a few. Liliana Cavani’s production at the Mikhailovsky Theatre will be conducted by maestro Mikhail Tatarnikov.
