Golden Mask Nominations for the 2012/13 Season

The Mikhailovsky Theatre has been nominated for a Golden Mask in 21 categories for the 2012/13 season. Almost all of last year’s full-scale productions were recognized by the panel of experts for this, the highest national theatre prize.

Eugene Onegin, Billy Budd, and Der fliegende Holländer are all in the running for the title of ‘Best Opera Production’. Romeo and Juliet and The Flames of Paris will be fighting it out for ‘Best Ballet Production’.

The theatre’s Musical Director and Principal Conductor, Mikhail Tatarnikov, has been nominated for a Golden Mask in the ‘Best Conductor’ category for both opera and ballet — for Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd and Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet respectively. Both Andriy Zholdak, for Eugene Onegin, and Vasily Barkhatov, for Der fliegende Holländer, have been nominated for ‘Best Operatic Stage Director’. Mikhail Messerer is in the running for the ‘Best Ballet Master/Choreographer’ award for The Flames of Paris.

Nominated performers include Tatiana Ryaguzova and Evgeny Akhmedov (Tatiana and Lensky in Onegin), Asmik Grigorian and Dmitry Golovnin (Senta and Erik in Der fliegende Holländer), Andrei Bondarenko (Billy in the opera Billy Budd), Natalia Osipova and Leonid Sarafanov (for their leading roles in Nacho Duato’s Romeo and Juliet), and Oksana Bondareva (Jeanne in The Flames of Paris).

Overall, Eugene Onegin has received the most nominations. In addition to the stage director and the artists who portrayed Tatiana and Lensky, those hoping to be awarded Golden Masks for this production include Monika Pormale and Andriy Zholdak for ‘Best Set Design in Musical Theatre’, Rolands Peterkops and Marite Mastina-Peterkopa for ‘Best Costume Design in Musical Theatre’, and A.J. Weissbard for ‘Best Lighting Design in Musical Theatre’.
