Gala concert in Minsk
A gala concert featuring Mikhailovsky Theatre opera and ballet performers will be held on 7 October as part of the Days of St. Petersburg in Minsk festival. The concert will take place in the Palace of the Republic, one of the largest performance spaces in Belarus.
On this evening, the Mikhailovsky Theatre ballet company will present the second act of Boris Asafiev’s The Flames of Paris to the Minsk public. The main role will be performed by Ivan Vasiliev, who began his spectacular career in Minsk. “It’s always a great pleasure to dance in Minsk,” Vasiliev said. “It was here that I studied, spent long hours in rehearsal rooms, and worked through every last nuance, dreaming of becoming a great ballet dancer.” The dancer warmly recalled his first stage appearances at the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus, dancing Ali in Le Corsaire and Basilio in Don Quixote. The part of Philippe in The Flames of Paris, which Ivan Vasiliev will perform in Minsk, carries a special importance for him. “It is a compelling and emotionally rich performance, which demands not only technical precision, but serious acting,” Vasiliev said. “In this regard, there is no limit to how far a dancer can push his talents.”
The concert will continue with fragments from Russian operas. Arias and duets from Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, Iolanta, and The Enchantress, Borodin’s Prince Igor, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sadko, The Tsar’s Bride, The Golden Cockerel, and May Night will all be performed. The concert will feature leading soloists from the opera company, including Maria Litke, Natalia Mironova, Olesya Petrova, Fyodor Ataskevich, Nikolay Kopylov, and Boris Pinkhasovich.
This will not be the first encounter between the Mikhailovsky Theatre and residents of the Belarusian capital. In December 2013, the Mikhailovsky Theatre presented Verdi’s opera Un ballo in maschera as part of the Minsk International Christmas Opera Forum. The ballets Giselle, La Sylphide, and La Esmeralda will be performed at the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus, in productions by People’s Artist of the USSR Nikita Dolgushin, whose artistic career was inextricably linked with the Mikhailovsky Theatre.
