Don Quixote to close our 188th Season

Don Quixote, a work filled with sunshine and carefree fun, will be the closing show for this season. The ballet, which never fails to leave the audience feeling elated, will be held on the 23rd of July and feature Angelina Vorontsova and Ivan Vasiliev in the starring roles.

As one of the most popular performances in the classical repertoire, Don Quixote sparkles with humor, youthful energy and joie-de-vivre. The jubilant crowd dances to the plucking of guitar strings and the chattering of castanets. Who wouldn’t want to play a bullfighter in a red cloak or a flower girl with roses in her hair? The dancers come exuberantly alive on stage and their emotions fill the auditorium to the brim. The focus of the action falls on a couple in love, Kitri and Basilio. Their adventures and fabrications provide ample opportunity for dancing. The performers in the main roles are free to exhibit some dramatic flair — and not only do they demonstrate phenomenal technique and virtuosity, they also relive their characters’ stories in a new way in each performance: an escape, a feigned suicide, and a long-awaited wedding. Today, Angelina Vorontsova and Ivan Vasiliev embody the pinnacle of Russian ballet, and in Don Quixote their excellence is fully manifested.
