Desmond Richardson’s Farewell Tour

On 30 and 31 March, Complexions returns to St. Petersburg. The performances to be staged by the American company at the Mikhailovsky Theatre are part of Desmond Richardson’s farewell tour, and will see the eminent dancer take to the stage with the company he co-founded for the last time. Since its establishment in 1994, Complexions has flouted ballet convention and broken customary stage stereotypes. The company’s energetic approach, born of a mixture of styles and cultures, and a union of classical, jazz, and contemporary music, has moved artists and audiences around the world. The programme for the tour includes compositions by the company’s Artistic Director, Dwight Rhoden, along with a completely new work by choreographer Jae Man Joo.

According to Ballet Magazine, Desmond Richardson has a plastique „passing through time and space with power and grace... Heart-stopping in beauty and complexity.“ Richardson previously danced with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Forsythe Company in Frankfurt, and the American Ballet Theatre, where Nacho Duato selected him to dance in his ballet Remanso. He has performed on the world’s most famous stages: the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro alla Scala, the Opéra National de Paris, and the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres, and has worked with international ballet stars like Diana Vishneva, Alessandra Ferri, and Roberto Bolle. However, his creative experience goes far beyond this. Desmond Richardson is regularly involved in projects that aim to take the beauty of dance to the non-theatregoing public. These include the Broadway shows Movin’ Out and Fosse (for which he received a prestigious Tony Award); the renowned musical film Chicago; television programmes in Italy, America, Israel, and Australia, as well as performances with stars like Aretha Franklin and Madonna. Desmond Richardson now has a flourishing teaching career; he regularly gives master classes in New York and in other cities around the world.
