Day of Remembrance for Siege of Leningrad Victims
On 8 September, the day Leningrad was besieged, residents of the city will gather outside the theatre entrance on Arts Square to read aloud the names of those who perished. The memorial reading will begin at noon with a minute of silence, signalled by a cannon salute fired from Peter and Paul Fortress.
This year, the Day of Remembrance will be marked across the city, with events taking place at dozens of venues in different neighbourhoods. The Mikhailovsky Theatre is one place where you can pay your respects to the victims of the Siege. The microphone will be open to everyone.
The 900 days of the Siege represent the most tragic page in our city’s history. While the exact number of casualties is unknown, behind every name stood a whole life, and those names must never be forgotten. May they ring out, in the voices of our own contemporaries, on this sorrowful day.
