Coppelia. 6 and 7 February

The premiere performances of the ballet “Coppelia” will continue on 6 and 7 February. The production opened the current 188th season at the Mikhailovsky Theatre to great critical acclaim.

“Ballet Master Mikhail Messerer is voluntarily unfashionable if one thinks that fashion is a burning desire to create a rarity and to be utterly eccentric”, “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” newspaper wrote. “He just does his job perfectly well: he stages classical productions after Arthur Saint-Leon, Marius Petipa, Enrico Cecchetti and Alexander Gorsky — with tact and intelligence. He uses his huge experience to create a dense choreographic text full of humour from all the pieces scattered all over the place. The approach works well for the overall perception of a full-length production in three acts as well as beautiful little details that guarantee the quality of the performance”.

“The production boasts of liveliness, candour and noisy excitement of childhood,” the columnist of “Delovoy Petersburg” newspaper claimed. “There are lots of dances in the ballet: simple and virtuoso as well, character and classical variations; for the dancers, there is a chance to show their actor’s talent and brilliant dance technique”.

“Vyacheslav Okunev used the traditional theatre scenery in a very effective way: he built a beautiful small town located, according to the libretto, somewhere on the border with Galicia, that is, on the territory of modern Ukraine and southern Poland,” “Moskovsky Komsomolets” newspaper gives generous praise to the production. “In Act II, he created a wonderful workshop filled with all kinds of mechanical dolls: there is a Chinese, a Scotsman, a knight, an astrologer, a Spanish girl, a French girl, Pierrot, as well as a giant with a huge head. In Act III, the public sees a square with a new clock on the town hall. Every detail, all the stage space is filled with light and bright colours.”

On 6 February, the performance will feature Anastasia Smirnova and Nikita Tchetverikov. On 7 February, Veronika Markova and Ivan Zaytsev will star in the matinee performance, Angelina Vorontsova and Victor Lebedev in the evening.
