Cipollino will help diseased children
The Mikhailovsky Theatre during its London Tour will present the UK première of Cipollino on Saturday 17th and Saturday 24th July. The UK’s leading children’s cancer charity is to benefit from the performances of the popular ballet for children.
Paul Turner, Head of Major Fundraising said “It is wonderful news that Mikhailovsky Ballet is supporting CLIC Sargent with the UK première of Cipollino and I’m confident that our partnership will be a tremendous success.” Vladimir Kekhman, General Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre said “We very much hope that young children will enjoy Cipollino as much as children in Russia and all over the world. During our ballet season in London, we are delighted to take part in raising funds for CLIC Sargent, and we hope that this initiative will help the children, supported by CLIC Sargent, to win their fight with cancer.
The Mikhailovsky is involved in many charitable projects in our country, and for a long time we have been associated with Give a Life foundation, which raises money for curing children diagnosed with cancer.” As the fairy-tale story by Italian author Gianni Rodari which became the basis of the ballet set to music by Karen Khachaturian by Genrikh Mayorov is nearly unknown in Great Britain, the plot of the story will be narrated by actor, Duncan Pow, CLIC Sargent’s Patron. Duncan is best known for his role in Sky One’s Dream Team, as Liam Mackay the captain of Harchester United F.C. and as Linden Cullen in the BBC1 medical drama, Holby City.
Outside Russia the ballet Cipollino was first performed by the Mikhailovsky Theatre in autumn 2009 in the framework of the ballet festival in Mikkeli. In Finland the ballet included some short pieces of the fairytale told in Finnish. The performance was received great critical acclaim and the success gave the idea of including the ballet in the program of the London tour which is to take place at the London Coliseum on July 13th—25th.
