Christmas performances of The Snow Maiden

The premiere concert performance of The Snow Maiden has been the standout musical event of this autumn. Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpiece will be performed twice more in the run up to the festive season, on 23 and 24 December.

Music lovers who attended the premiere praised the quality of the musicianship and the elegance of the staging. The Mikhailovsky Theatre’s symphony orchestra and musical director Dmitri Jurowski received rave reviews for their «fine craftsmanship». Expressions such as «bedazzling artistry» and «vivid dramatic impact» were used to describe the work of the vocalists. Thanks to the taste and imagination of stage designer Vyacheslav Okunev, the rigour of the concert performance was complemented by the bright colours of the Russian countryside and the expressiveness of the country’s folk traditions.

The festive performances of The Snow Maiden will feature leading soloists from the theatre’s opera company, including Natalia Mironova, Svetlana Monchak, Maria Litke, Ekaterina Egorova, Sofia Fainberg, Marina Ogii, Stanislav Shvets, Yury Monchak, Alexander Kuznetsov, Dmitry Darov, and Boris Stepanov. The young Ukrainian singer Yulia Alekseyeva, already familiar to audiences of the Mikhailovsky Theatre for her role as Manon Lescaut, will debut as Kupava on 23 December.

Please note that the performance on 23 December falls under our monthly Student Wednesdays promotion. Under this scheme, any seat in the Mikhailovsky Theatre can be purchased for RUB 700 upon presentation of a valid student ID.
