Bolshoi Theatre stars to perform in Don Quixote
Bolshoi Theatre principal dancers Igor Tsvirko and Denis Rodkin will be performing on our stage in the ballet Don Quixote on 30 January and 27 February respectively. The Moscow stars will dance alongside our own wonderful principal, Angelina Vorontsova.
Don Quixote’s Basilio is one of Igor Tsvirko’s highest profile roles to date. While his character may seem a “simple Spanish man”, Tsvirko executes refined poses, masterful spins, and swift and spectacular jumps! Audiences at the Mikhailovsky Theatre have had the opportunity to witness the formidable skills of this Moscow performer on more than one occasion, and we are now delighted to welcome Igor Tsvirko with his new status, following his recent promotion to the rank of principal dancer in the Bolshoi Theatre’s ballet company. His authenticity, inner freedom, and temperament make his portrayal of Basilio absolutely irresistible.
Denis Rodkin has been called the “crown prince” of the Bolshoi Theatre. He enjoyed a meteoric rise in his career thanks to catching the attention of Nikolai Tsiskaridze, who began to train with this tall, slender young man from the corps de ballet. Today, Denis Rodkin’s repertoire includes leading roles on Russia’s most prominent stage, and he has won several awards, including the Prize of the President of Russia and the Prix Benois de la Danse. His Basilio stands out as a poor barber with something aristocratic about him. In fact, sometimes it seems like he is actually the heir to a ducal title who just wanted to have some fun among a noisy and cheerful crowd of commoners.
With performers of the calibre of Angelina Vorontsova, Denis Rodkin, and Igor Tsvirko, Don Quixote will certainly be a treat for the audience. The virtuoso dancing, stellar improvisation, generous emotions, and spectacular stunts make these performances delightful and memorable. The final wedding pas de deux between Kitri and Basilio has the potential to be a very powerful theatrical experience.
