An exhibition of ballet photography

The Fireplace Hall in the Dress Circle of the Mikhailovsky Theatre is hosting an exhibition by theatrical photographer Natalia Voronova. Natalia shot the images behind the scenes of some of our most exquisite ballet productions, including Giselle, ou Les Wilis, Swan Lake, and Cinderella.

„For me, photographing ballet is a source of joy and inspiration,“ the exhibition’s author tells us. „To successfully capture a moment that lasts only a split second is one of the most interesting challenges a photographer faces. The stage opens out in front of you here at an unusual angle, and the world behind the scenes is no less gripping. What should you capture? And how do you stay invisible in the process, without accidentally burning yourself on a hot spotlight or getting between it and the stage, keeping the camera unnoticed while observing when a scene change is coming and not blocking it? The other fascinating thing about ballet photography is that ballet is a universal language that everybody can understand. With the response I receive from ballet fans throughout the world, I increasingly understand that this is an art form that moves everyone.“

Natalia Voronova found her way into the challenging profession of theatrical photography via the backstage areas of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres. Her camera has captured images from the Dance Open, Context.Diana Vishneva, and Kremlin Gala festivals, and from gala concerts at the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre.
