An early introduction to the theatre
We love to welcome St. Petersburg’s youngest residents to the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Getting acquainted with the fairy-tale world of the theatre is an important event in any child’s life, and so we offer special subscription packages for children which make going to the theatre accessible, interesting, and always a treat.
Baron von Kammerton has been working at the Mikhailovsky Theatre for more than a century, so he knows its every nook and cranny and is the guardian of all its secrets. Get to know this fascinating character by attending the sessions in the Backstage Story subscription. The Baron will tell children about opera and ballet, and talk about what makes up an orchestra. He will use games to explain dramatic conventions to his young audience. This will be followed by a performance of the children’s opera Velikan (The Giant), which a young Sergey Prokofiev wrote at the age of nine. This subscription, covering the first half of the next season, is still available online and at the box office.
As part of the Country of Orchestria subscription, children will have the chance to get up close and personal with all of the instruments that make up a large symphony orchestra. Curious little Overtone and the magical Fairy of Harmony will take children on a tour of the cities of Hammerburg, Stringbruck, and Trumpetdorf, where they will meet some of our best musicians.
The Chizhik’s Tales subscription features fairy tales with incredible sand animations. These interactive musical performances for the youngest members of our audience will serve as an introduction to the plots and music of famous ballets by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Khachaturian.
Our playbill also includes a wide range of ballets full of magic, metamorphoses, and incredibly beautiful sets and costumes, which are sure to appeal to children and convince them of the magical power of the theatre. Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Cipollino will make children’s first encounters with the world of opera and ballet a real joy.
