Alexey Lukirskiy becomes orchestra concertmaster
Alexey Lukirskiy — a remarkable violinist who has performed with some of the world’s foremost musical collectives — has become concertmaster of the Mikhailovsky Theatre orchestra.
Alexey began playing the violin at the age of six. At nine, he began performing as a soloist with Kharkov’s leading ensembles. He continued his musical education in Moscow, studying at the Merzlyakovsky College of Music of the Moscow Conservatory, the Ippolitov-Ivanov State Musical Pedagogical Institute, and the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music. He went on to complete his postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory and was a Brahms Competition winner in 2003. During his postgraduate years, Alexey divided his time between studying and playing in the Bolshoi Theatre orchestra. From 2009–2011, and again from 2013–2017, he was concertmaster in the Mariinsky Theatre orchestra, and in 2012 he played in Valencia, in the orchestra created by Lorin Maazel.
„I’ve been lucky enough to study and work with some of the great masters and in the company of some magnificent musicians, like Svetlanov, Gergiev, Muti, Rozhdestvensky, Zubin Mehta, Plácido Domingo, and Gil Shaham,“ Alexey tells us. „I combined my postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory with performing at the Bolshoi Theatre, an orchestra steeped in tradition. I then had another entirely different experience during seven years performing at the Mariinsky Theatre, with its own tempo, dynamics, and performances on different stages. The offer of this post from the Mikhailovsky Theatre intrigued and inspired me; in addition to a solid opera repertoire, I was attracted by the possibility of contributing to the creation of a chamber collective with its own repertoire, concerts, and subscriptions. The different concert venues available here, together with the theatre’s devoted following, make it possible to realize new creative ideas which I hope will find resonance with our listeners and inspire our musicians.“
„It is my strong belief that the quality of an opera and ballet theatre is determined primarily by the quality of its orchestra,“ says Mikhailovsky Theatre Artistic Director Vladimir Kekhman. „Our orchestra has come a long way in recent years — I’d say it has made a breakthrough — and is very highly regarded in professional circles. The wonderful musician Alexey Lukirskiy has now joined us as concertmaster. Not only is this a confirmation of very highest standards that are associated with our theatre today, it also represents an opportunity for us to continue improving and developing. I’m grateful to Alexey for the choice he’s made. I’m certain that his time at the Mikhailovsky Theatre will bring creative joy both to him and to our audience.“
