“An outstanding musician passed away. It is an irreplaceable loss — for me, for the Mikhailovsky Theatre and for the musical community as a whole”, Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre Vladimir Kekhman comments. “At this particular moment, I would like to remind my colleagues that we should not underestimate the virus and the risks it brings. The last performance conducted by Maestro Vedernikov was Cavalleria rusticana at the opening of the opera season. We are dedicating the next performance of the opera on 10 November to his memory. May he rest in peace.”

The Mikhailovsky Theatre had an honour to praise the talent and the personality of the conductor after his appointment in 2019. A deep and thoughtful musician, Alexander Vedernikov was able to lead his orchestra to the highest level of performance and managed to give his attention to every group of instruments. A cornerstone of his career at the Mikhailovsky Theatre was a new production of Aida comparable with the finest achievements of the world’s best venues. The audience was enjoying the symphonic concerts prepared and conducted by Vedernikov and performed with the Mikhailovsky Orchestra at the Grand Hall of the St Petersburg Philharmonia.

Alexander Vedernikov was highly respected all around the world. In 2001–2009, he was the Principal Conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. In 2009–2018, he was the leader of the Odense Symphony Orchestra. He also was the Principal Conductor of the Danish Royal Opera and collaborated with opera houses and orchestras all around the world. In 2008, he was honoured with the prestigious award BBC Music Magazine for performance of Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no. 1.
